Camden Collective – Freelance Accelerator Course

Last week I took part in a freelance accelerator course organised by Camden Collective.

It was a week long course with talks and workshops from freelancers and startups from the local area on different aspects of being a freelancer. Ranging from accounts and finance and legal issues, to developing our business ideas, finding clients and marketing. It was really good to hear about other peoples experience of freelancing and get advice from people who have been successful.

It was a great opportunity to meet and build connections with other freelancers in a range of different creative fields, and I’m looking forward to seeing how things work out for everyone I met on the course. It also brought about possibilities for working with some of them on things I may not have otherwise considered.

It was a really productive week with a lot of useful information to take on at once, and has given me more focus towards really getting things started. It also helped me to develop my business idea and to have a clearer view on where I want to take things. One of the most productive things was being introduced to the business model canvas as a way of getting the jumble of thoughts in my head onto post-its and organised in a more constructive way and this is something I will definitely be using to develop my business idea going forward.

On the last day we had to come up with 2 things we were going to implement from what we had learnt throughout the week, mine were to…..

1. Register as a sole trader

2. Do what I say I’m going to do! Mostly with regards to marketing and networking.

The first one is done and number 2 is in progress.

At the end of the week we all had to redo our elevator pitches that we had done at the start of the first day and it was interesting to hear how much all of our freelance business ideas had developed in the space of a week and how our pitches had changed.

If you get the chance to do a course with Camden Collective do it! It’s the best thing I’ve done so far this year.

So I’ve decided as I’ve made the big decision to go for it as a Freelance Designer, it’s time to ditch the “occasionally used to post some images of my work” Tumblr blog and create a more focused blog that better represents Me, My work and My Clients.

So here’s a bit of an introduction to the me I’m trying to become…….
